Coffee and Going Off Campus

One of the things that we have at schools are the good ole' coffee franchises that want to come in and sell coffee.

I have to confess that I would like to have a good coffee place on campus. Would make it better than slop that is normally served. Why can we not have good coffee. After all we can not leave the campus to go out and get coffee, unlike others who can easily leave.

Pearls Before Swine

In the Room

When teaching there are many things that are required. We have small bathrooms at the school that are rather nice. Granted they are over used and need to be cleaned far more often then what they are done.

The maintiance people were really nice and placed in some Grohe faucets in there. Now they were plain I am wondering if there is something else that is going on.

Have a most happy day.

IT and School

Well my son is deciding to go for some of the jobs in IT that are out there. I am recommending him getting a degree for the IT. The IT profession is becoming more and more competitive as more jobs go overseas.

You need to get some good training. In that way there is much that is needed.

Have a happy day. And a good and happy new year.

Kids Need Rules?

In St Louis they are discovering that kids need rules. This is news? really? are you sure?

Kids need to know the bounderies. everyone knows this except the writer of this article.

I still want to know why this is news. How does the obvious become the rule and the ground breaking research.

Well I hope you have a happy day.

Working and Student Teaching

Can I have a full-time job while Student Teaching?

The question is somewhat of an easy answer. No.

The amount of time needed for student teaching is fairly simple.

7am to 4pm for school time. About 9 hours a day.

2 to 4 hours of class prep time. This will take varying amount of time. Less at the start and more at the middle and end.

1 hour for classroom work. You are usually taking a class while student teaching. This will take time. Not to mention the reports and reflections you have to write. This also includes time for the portfolio items. Again this varies and sometimes can be done on weekends.

1 hour or more for grading. Again this varies at the part of the stretch you are in.

Let's add on to that a part-time job of about 4 hours a day. If you have a full-time job you are adding in 6-8 hours a day.

The other problem is of course, you need a good recommendation from your student teaching. This is really important for your long term future.

To be fair: My student teaching recommendation did not matter one iota. As long as I passed my current employer did not care. They were more interested in the other parts that made me a good fit.

Problems at school

One of the large problems with having your own child at school is when they need acne treatment and they refuse to get it. After all you hear some of the jobkes and some of the problems

It got real bad when a teacher mentioned it to me. Grrr. That really boethered me .

Well I hope you have better day. And for those in the Northern US. For the teachers I hope you have a snow day!

Have a great day!

College in High School

Let's say you are ready for high school and you know mostly what you want to be. So college is a must. Every little thing for college will help. I know a student who did diet pills for month to lose weight for some pictures.

1. Stay in school
2. Take AP classes
Any type of college credit on the high school side saves money in the long run. A former student of mine finished high school with almost 2 years of college. She is the exception. But if you can come close to finishing one that will cut a lot of money off in the long run and is a good thing.

More later.

Have a happy day

Small Classes

Well we are always looking at something new for students. I was thinking of scrapbooking as we did one at my first school. One of those little classes that fill time.

I taught a TKD class that was a lot of fun. At the end the students broke boards. Other students had a short car maitance class. Which I would have liked to be in on, as a student.

Have a happy day.

Answering

I have been slumming in and around Yahoo Answers and answering many questions. I like seeing what people are saying. Lots of students complaining about teachers. I may as well as go and say, I checked for life insurance rates to get through to some of the students for as much as they listen.

I would suggest that you fluff around on Yahoo answers and see what all happens.

Have a most happy day.

Can I earn a Teaching Degree Online

Question: I do not have a degree can I teach with am Associates degree or without a degree?

Short answer: No.

Long Answer: The Internet is reforming education and how we earn degrees. It is essay to find a MA degree in education online but you need a Bachelor degree.

Step in Western Governors University. One thing you need to know is that you have to a degree from an accredited college. WGU is regionally accredited and accredited by NCATE. This is very good.

I went to WGU for a little over a year. During this time I earned my second BA degree, this time in Social Studies Education. I had to earn 100+ units in one year. Now to do this, I worked 8-10 hours a day, 5-6 days a week. I worked very hard.

You will find that if you have an AA degree your time will go quicker. But you can earn 100% of your degree from WGU.

I have a degree and want to teach

Question: I have teaching degree in English, or History, or Math, or Science and I want to teach high school or middle school, can I do this?

Yes.

Well what steps do I take?

1. Contact your state deparement of education and see the requirements.
2. You may need to 'prove' that you have done something, a portfolio.
3. You may need to have job to even start.
4. You may need to be accepted into a program for 2nd career teachers.
5. You may need to take formal education classes.

Good news, you can do this it may just take some time to be a full teacher, on par of 3-5 years. The good news is that you can earn money teaching while starting this method.

Contact your state Deparment of Education. You Google "your state name" education to find the data.

Can I Get A Teaching Job?

I have been trolling around Yahoo! answers for a bit in the teaching section. And I notice a lot of the same questions come up time and time again.

Can I teach without a degree?

No. <--- notice there are no qualifiers on this one.
I will have a future blog on how to approach this

I have a degree but not in education, can I teach?

Maybe.

First, you need a degree in a ‘certifiable’ field like math or history or English.
Second, you will need to check your state requirements for certification or licensure or teaching certificate.

See - Find out Information on getting to the teaching information.

Most all states offer an alternative route to certification. Depending on the state you will need to take the Praxis Test for your subject from ETS.

Once taken you will need to apply for certification and find a job. Which one first will depend on your state.

Most states will require you take education courses in fairly short order. As an example, Kansas requires you to go to a state school through the restricted license program.

Read here for my suggestion of a school.

Where to Find Information to Teach

One of the basic questions people ask: Where can I find information on if I can teach.

The first basic source is of course Google. Enter "(State Name) education" into the search query box. One the first page should be your state's department of education. Look at the section on licensure or teacher certification or teacher quality.

The second place to look is on the ETS Praxis website. This will provide you info for about 40+ states on the requirements for the states.

Now also let me say, before you go running somewhere begging for help and giving people a healthy grilling of questions please do some research.
