Put it in a memo

One of my most hated things in life is . . . meetings.

Today we had another meeting to discuss term life insurance. I was sitting there thinking . . . is this not what email was made for.

I mean for real. The amount of info actually given could have been written down in a single paragraph and I could read it.

Arugh. It is frustrating.

The Establishment Clause

I always love some people who try to make points that are not there. They sound so good and yet . . . we scratch the surface and facade passes. When I was looking for CAT5e I became distracted with a friend who sent me this flyer:

"Is Public School Legal?

The first amendment reads:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
The first amendment has two purposes; first, to prevent the government from controlling information and thereby the people. Second, to insure that no man is punished for his beliefs. Our beliefs, attitudes and opinions are based upon the information we receive.
Our government takes the weakest, most vulnerable members of society, little children, places them in a government controlled environment, public school, and forces feeds them government mandated information. This is a clear violation of the first amendment.
Public funding of education is probably legal. Government control of curriculum is not.
Abraham Lincoln said: "Those principles taught in the classroom in one generation become public policy in the next."
Self determination and government schools are mutually exclusive.

Where do I start with this one.

The first amendment: the question is the establishment of religion. First (the easy one) the government shall not impede up one's practice of religion. In other words do not make a law forbidding me to go to church (or other house of worship).

Second, the government will not establish or create a state mandated religion. This has been taken to mean a favoritism of one religion over another. I think this is also good.

Now for the non sequitor how is the public education a "clear violation of the first amendment"? To this end I am not to sure.

The point is better made by saying that federal Establishment of control of public education is clearly a violation of the Constitution and the in particular the 10th amendment.

Was there a problem 100 years when Christianity was taught in the school? When the Bible was a textbook? I am not to sure.

The other funny thing is that the federal government does NOT mandate materials. Even the the moronic NCLB there is no specified material other then science and math and reading that need to be taught.

Working out

While teaching it seems to be easy to gain weight. I know several teachers who use
lipovox to stay skinny. Let's be real, while we are on out feet, we do not sweat, unless we are a pe teacher. We sit in desks and stand a lot.

Plus with class prep we seldom have time to exercise.

So have a happy day.

Why that way . . .

Business things always amaze me. I was talking with a friend and he was telling the difference of computer rentals vs. computer buying.

There seems to be some tax breaks that make it cheaper to rent in the long run rather then buying. I will confess I did not understand the difference. However, the IRS sees a serious difference.

Well I hope you have a most happy day.

In the Classroom

One of the interesting things about schools is the switch and hardness to laptop computer in the classroom. Personally, I am of the opinion that most are rather abused.

This means that the everything is based on computers and they are overused in the classroom. Sometimes computers are just used for the sake of using them

Remember unless the students are learning, there is no education going on, even with computers.

Well have a most happy day.

Supplies for the classroom

I always try to get a best buy on teacher supplies.

One thing I have noticed . . . they always seem to have a sale. This tells me they have high profit margins. This frustrates me. I mean really frustrates me. I do not make piles of money, and it seems like I have to spend piles of money.

Have a most happy day.

Making More Money

One of the ways I try to earn more money is to play the stock market. I try to make $200 a month . . . and I ususally do ok.

However, when you choose a broker (like etrade, scottrade, most banks) you need to be sure they have no balance transfer fee on your money.

I mean . . . some of these places want you to pay $50 to get your money. Grrr. Makes me mad.

Have a happy day.

Vacation TIme

I need a vaation ... one of the problems with getting four weeks off a year and all during the summmer is that something always comes up. Grrrr. . . I wanted to go to a Hilton Head rental and enjoy a beach. But no. There was something else going on that I could not go.

Well I hope your vacation goes better then mine that never occured.

Have a most happy day.

Well if you have any suggestions please let me know.

Happy Days and . . .

I an a fan of many things, I have recently recieved a nice large screen TV. Of course the bad news is now I want a leather home theater seating.

However, on only a small teacher salary, I do not make that much money. I would love some really nice furniture.

I am hoping that salary will be going up soon.

Well I hope that you have a most happy day.

Once Upon A Moment

I once dated a girl that loved Halloween and always had parties. Since she is now a mum and has some small kids. She loves to send out Halloween invitations and many other items just for fun.

She seems to throw parties at a drop of a hat. Most of the parties are for the kids. From what I understand, she throws some for her and her friends.

Well I have to confess I like the style of her parties and for her kids.

Well have a most happy day.

You thought you had budget problems.

When looking into Santa Fe dehumidifiers and then reading about I was amazed at the waste of the government.

Well look at this. A small county in Texas is going to be left holding the bag of $7 Million ($7,000,000) for going after people they should have gone after. The state of Texas is going to be thrilled to have this extra money tacked on after this fiasco of a raid on fundie mormon compound.

For this same 7M dollars a 130 new teachers could have been hired.

Wasted resources. More money down a rat hole that did not matter. now these poor people will have their privacy invaded just be having the illegally gotton DNA samples.

Out and About

One of the things I used to like to do was to teach outside, usually under a tree. There were two of us at the private school that did that. Since I left, I heard he bought some patio furniture to sit on that goes under the tree.

I would just love the idea of teaching that way in a discussion format. Of course the one real problem is that students will get quickly distracted.

Have a most happy day.
